ABOUT US

A HUMBLE BEGINNING

Pilgrim Hospital Radio (PHR) has been providing a dedicated service to the patients of Boston's Pilgrim Hospital for over 40 years!
Started in 1974 by Mel and Martin Kennedy and their associate Mike Carson, Pilgrim Hospital Radio had very humble beginnings. Broadcasting from a space little bigger than a broom cupboard, the radio soon proved an important part of patient welfare. Since 1988, we have had our very own custom-built space, comprising 2 studios, an office and a library. Officially opened by the then Mayor of Boston, Councillor Geoff Moulder, this suite is the home for the 20+ voluntary staff who broadcast throughout the week.

ENTERTAINING YOU SINCE 1974

The key aim of PHR is to entertain the patients and staff of Pilgrim Hospital, with our dedicated team of ward visitors collecting song requests on a weekly basis ready for our evening shows. Since 2016, we have also been broadcasting online, meaning we get listeners from all over the world, from the Lincolnshire countryside to the far reaches of New Zealand. Alongside the music, we like to keep you up to date with local sports news, cinema and theatre listings, and the occasional interview.
Our interviews have included a wide range of people, including local celebrities such as Commonwealth boxing champion Callum Johnson, mayors of Boston, and a few famous faces. Interviews from artists such as Daniel O'Donnell and Ken Dodd are two which are well remembered but many stories could be told from over the years. You may also occasionally hear famous voices, such as Al Murray in our jingles.

OUT AND ABOUT

Outside the studio, we can often be found providing commentary and entertainment at local events. These have included the Sea Bank Marathon and more recently the Boston Marathon and a range of Butterfly Hospice events. We are also involved in work experience programs for Boston College and outreach work with local schools.
PHR would not be the success that it is without the dedication of our volunteers. The first 40 years have been happy and successful, and with the group of volunteers we have there is no reason why the next 40 years cannot be even better.
